The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Cystophora retroflexa (Labillardière) J.Agardh

Adjective (Latin), bent back, reflexed (Stearn 1973).

Type information
Type locality: ‘Ad capitas Van-Diemen’ littora [Cape Van Diemen, south-eastern Tasmania) (Labillardière 1806: 113). Type: FI (Womersley 1987: 396). Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Ducker (1979: 20) for more information on the type locality of this species.
