Description
Fronds are deep wine-red, 15-30 cm tall, with a soft but not gelatinous texture. The main axis subdichotomously branched with pinnately branched laterals. The axes are strongly compressed throughout the entire thallus. The thalli are bipinnate to tripinnate from one strongly leading axis. Most of the laterals produce dense elongate, fringing branchlets, producing a crowded, bushy appearance, where female reproductive structures develop. The carpogonial branch and auxiliary cell branch are produced from the same supporting cell. The auxiliary cell branch is strongly curved back to the supporting cell. The auxiliary cell branch consistently contains six cells with a terminal auxiliary cell. When fertilized, the carpogonium divides transversely and fuses with the auxiliary cell. The fused cell projects and becomes the gonimoblast initial producing a gonimoblast with enlarged auxiliary cells, which results in a series of closely appressed carposporangia without an involucre or sterile filaments. Mature carposporophytes are embedded and swollen locally in the lateral branchlets.
