Taxonomic notes
According to Hughey, Silva & Hommersand (2001), the type of Iridaea heterocarpa P. et R. [Mazzaella heterocarpa (P. et R.) Fred.] represents the tetrasporangial phase of a species of Chondrus, possibly C. crispus Stackh. An ITS 1 sequence of the type of I. heterocarpa from Kamchatka, Russia differed from that of C. crispus Stackh. from England and Connecticut and from C. platynus (C. Ag.) J. Ag. from the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia by 1 bp. They also conclude that plants attributed to I. heterocarpa in Alaska belong primarily in M. phyllocarpa (P. et R.) Perest and those distributed from southern Alaska to southern California belong in M. oregona (Doty) Hughey, P.C. Silva & Hommersand.

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
